Frequently Asked Questions
- Who goes to spiritual direction? Anyone who wants to become more aware of the divine presence and how to discern where that presence is leading them. It is all based on your desire.
- What do we talk about in spiritual direction? People talk about spiritual experiences they have had. Some talk about what’s going on in their lives. Others come wondering where God is. Still others, want to talk about a life-decision. What one experiences in prayer is a central topic for discussion.
- Is there training for spiritual directors? Yes. There are a good number of trained spiritual directors, who have receibed instruction through formal programs. I have been trained through the Hesychia School of Spiritual Direction in Tucson, Arizona. But, there is no national standard of certification for spiritual directors. A training program may offer certificates of completion, but that does not guarantee that a person is a sound spiritual director. Only the Sacred Mystery can truly certify a spiritual director. So when choosing a director, look for someone you resonate with, someone who listens well, a person who has an active commitment to prayer and meditation, and someone who helps you find the wisdom within you.
- I am not religious but want spiritual direction, is that OK? Yes! You are most welcome in spiritual direction. I will never push anyone to join any religion. Spiritual direction is about listening to your sacred story. It is NOT about making you convert to any religion. Moreover, if God-language or religious terminology turns you off, just tell your spiritual director and they will do their best to use language that fits your experience.
- Is spiritual direction different from therapy? Yes, it is. Spiritual directors do not necessarily have training in psychotherapy or counseling. Spiritual directors do not offer any diagnose or try to solve emotional issues. The focus of spiritual direction is on God and spiritual living. Spiritual direction, does, however, complement therapy. But, spiritual direction is not a substitute for therapy.
